In the Blue Hall of the Library, 7-28 April, was the exhibition “Onegin—the Continuation ...”.

Forming the basis of the exhibition was the gallery of costume mock-ups by artist-engineer students at the Moscow Art Theatre School, for the characters of Tchaikovsky’s famous opera Eugene Onegin. The show was dedicated to the memory of Evgeny Kolobov—conductor, founder, and artistic director of the Novaya Opera Theatre—and was the result of joint work by the RSAL and the Moscow Art Theatre School.

A unique collection of historical and documentary materials from the RSAL collections helped students not only create clothing designs for Pushkin’s heroes, but also to reproduce the accessories that were in vogue at the time.

The exhibition presented the masterfully executed reconstructions of bonnets, reticule handbags, men’s corsets, suspenders, and chatelaines. The exposition revealed the secrets of creating theatrical imitation fabrics, jewelry, embroidery, and lace.

Original prints from the RSAL collections showed samples of fashionable clothing from early 19th century French magazines, which were imitated by the cream of Russian society.
