Virtual Exhibition, VKHUTEMAS – XXI

Date: 28.09.2020

10.06.20

This project is the continuation of the RSAL’s Workshop exposition series.

VKHUTEMAS – XXI [VKHUTEMAS is the acronym for the Higher Art and Technical Studios (Vysshiye Khudozhestvenno-Tekhnicheskiye Masterskiye)] demonstrates the interaction of today's students of the arts universities and schools of contemporary art with famous artists who taught 100 years ago.

At the beginning of the 20th century, VKHUTEMAS was a unique phenomenon in the educational system of the young Soviet Union. Studying there were stars of the art scene, Alexander Vesnin, Anna Golubkina, Ilya Golosov, Wassily Kandinsky, Ivan Klyun, Pyotr Konchalovsky, Aristarkh Lentulov, Ilya Mashkov, Konstantin Melnikov, Vladimir Tatlin, Robert Falk, Alexandra Ekster, and many others. The task of the workshops was, using the concept of new artistic pedagogy, to reflect the achievements of the latest trends in art, to form a new type of artist—a highly skilled artist for industry.

Using RSAL’s collections, participants in the exhibition studied the legacy of VKHUTEMAS, which they used to create their contemporary pieces.
