On 5 March 2020, the Knock at the Door Exhibition of the Famous Belarusian Artist Matvey Basov Was Held

Date: 28.09.2020

At the UN headquarters in New York, an eponymous exhibition was held at the end of 2018. At the Russian State Art Library, Matvey Basov presented new works on 5 March, in which he continued to develop the theme of the Holocaust—the history of people from the Minsk ghetto during the Great Patriotic War (22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945).

The exhibition was a visual reminder of history’s cruel lessons. In paintings, graphics, and collages, the master displayed his talent in combining the theme of the suffering of the people with a vivid reflection of peaceful life. Employing hyperintense volumetric strokes, Basov creates the optical effects of layering, of history that can repeat itself.

Knock at the Door, the title of one of the main paintings of the exposition, is about the tragic fate of people in the Minsk ghetto who knew what a sudden loud knock at their house meant.

Today the artist Matvey Basov is better known abroad than at home and in Russia. His paintings are in collections and museums in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Israel, Spain, Lithuania, the USA, and Estonia.
